Pukará de Quitor (pukara - Quechua for fortress) is a pre-Columbian stone fortress on Quitor hill, 3km from San Pedro, overlooking the valley of Rio San Pedro. It was built by an atacameño people, the Ayllu de Quitor, who cultivated fields at the foot of Quitor hill and erected the fort during the XII century in response to the expansionism of their Aymaran neighbours. The
fortress seems to grow out of the hill, with stones extracted from the
river banks.
from a zigzagging path to the top
All too soon, we must head back towards Calama airport, admiring the Valle once more from the road
