Volcanoes and lakes abound in this part of central Chile. After getting some km under our belts on the Ruta Nacional 5, we head inland south-east towards the town of Villarrica (with a Lago and Volcan named for it).
It is happily placed on the westernmost point of the lake, south of which is Chile's Seven Lakes district (Siete Lagos), one of which we see one today. Because the volcano itself is snow-capped and hiding in the white cloud, we miss it until we're almost upon it!
But don't forget to look down as well as up!
On the easternmost point of Villarrica lake is a bustling little town, Pucon
with a fine central square
and familiar-looking statues (remember the pre-Columbino museum in Santiago?)
You'll have seen that the theme of the volcano is echoed in all its street signs!
