A windy day and where are we to find shelter to boil water and make a breakfast fit for travellers? Luckily, Chile is spot-on with a selection of parada bus-shelters...
Made for the job! Breakfast too - some standards aren't to be compromised.
We're ready! South America's only colony of king penguins (apart from a few on St Helena, all others in the wild are on Antarctica) is on the west coast of Chilean Tierra del Fuego at Pinguino del Rey
The website warns that there's no guarantee of seeing any, in case they're off feeding, but here they are
with the fuzzy brown youngsters milling about
they won't moult for several more months even though they already act like hunched, truculent teenagers, shuffling around, calling for food, and being ticked off by their parents
The colony is on the beach, about 40-50m away from the viewing point squawking and squabbling, preening or stretching - sometimes looking for all the world as though they're standing around for a chat
What the photos don't convey is how unbelievably cold it is in the wind so it's not surprising that they all stand with their backs to it, while we're bundled up in coats and bracing ourselves
Helpfully, the centre gives a know-your-king-penguin guide
