30 miles from San Rafael
runs the Atuel river, a tributary of Rio Desaguadero, the longest river in Mendoza province.
The river itself is a tourist attraction, rafting and the like (and a great coffee stop)
but more famous is the winding canyon (consequently some great roads)
formed by the river into many and varied shapes, and coloured by minerals such as copper oxide (green) sulphue oxide (yellow), iron oxide (red). Volcanic activity has also contributed to some wacky formations.
and some interesting flora
The dammed lake Nihuil (in Mapuche - where "the thrush rests” or more worryingly “the tigers roar” - given what we saw...
I'd go with the former) is, in good weather, apparently a mirror. Not so calm for us but very beautiful
And, continuing a theme, we camp in the municipal site next to a dam, with a lovely sunset.
