Torres del Paine* National Park, in southern Chilean Patagonia, is about 70 miles north of the nearest town Puerto Natales (hence our base). *'torres' obviously towers and 'paine' (PIE-nay) means blue in the native Tehuelche (Aonikenk) language
It encompasses mountains, rivers, lakes, and glaciers belonging to the Southern Patagonia Ice Field. The Cordillera del Paine is the centrepiece, between the Magellanic subpolar forests and Patagonian Steppes (which we've driven through)
but it's very tranquil and beautiful
Driving along, we spot what looks like a glacier. Can't be, surely? So we go to investigate and find a hotel with a great view to the edge of Lago Grey
Looks small, doesn't it?
But those specks are people, so in fact it's pretty big
Further on, a waterfall
though it's windy enough out here to try to blow me over
Eventually, it blows the clouds from the mountains
and herds of guanaco come out too
and even a (shy) Patagonian skunk
