DAY 20 - TO TRES LAGOS

Last night was spent in Bajo Caracoles, a rather bleak hamlet, much of which appeared to be waste ground (we could barely tell what part was the intended bushcamp, so we parked up on a gravel section near the fuel stop; just as well Chile is very open to 'wild' camping: pulling up in a layby).  Interesting too that we're next to the police station - such a teeny-tiny village has not only its own station but three police cars!

It’s been a chilly old night and we're awake at 7am; there's no way of cooking hot food with such high winds, so we just set off down the RN40 towards the nearest town of Tres Lagos

But an unexpected detour proves necessary to refuel - petrol stations are stategically dotted so it's annoying to need to head, past winding rivers

and a striking turquoise lake

punctuated by stunning colours

to Gobernador Gregores (broadly just a Petrobras serbice station), and onward to Tres Lagos

another windswept town. A chap we greet outside our chosen campsite turns out to be a guest from The Netherlands rather than the owner, indeed one half of a couple who'd parked near us last night in Baja Caracoles (they recognised Vadar even if we hadn't spotted them!) They've had 4 tyre blowouts; blaming their heavy 4x4 with extended caravan unit being too heavy - puts our door accident into perspective.
